What the postcards are asking for
Whether or not there are upcoming elections, our politicians need to hear that Canadians want action in Darfur. The postcard campaign asks the Canadian government to help end this crisis in four ways:
• Protecting people: Canada can provide important capacities to the United Nations / African Union mission in Darfur. This includes contributing equipment, money, and logistical support.
• Providing relief: Up to four million Darfurians currently depend on international
assistance for food, shelter, clean water and medical care.
• Promoting peace: Canadian diplomatic and financial support can make important contibutions to the ongoing United Nations / African Union peace process.
• Punishing the perpetrators: For lasting peace, it is important to break the cycle of impunity. Canada can help support targeted sanctions against perpetrators and the efforts of the International Criminal Court.
