ABOUT SAVE DARFUR CANADA

Who we are:
Save Darfur Canada (SDC) is a national coalition of organizations undertaking Darfur advocacy.

What we do:
Our primary focus is to promote Darfur activism at the grassroots level by reaching out and providing advocacy resources to Canadian civil society groups and their memberships. SDC's campaigns and activities are designed to demonstrate public support for targeted Canadian engagement in Darfur, and to influence national policy by directing public actions towards foreign affairs decision-makers.

Our secondary foci include raising public awareness about the Darfur crisis, direct lobbying of Canadian decision-makers, advising government agencies on policy in Sudan, coordinating media strategies to increase domestic Darfur-related reporting, CO-developing Canadian-sponsored solutions to crisis issues in Darfur, and working with the international Globe for Darfur group.

What we do not do:
SDC does not directly work with populations in Darfur, though we do at times coordinate fundraising efforts for Canadian organizations who do. SDC has relationships with a variety of domestic and international Darfur conflict specialists and we do occasionally provide input for policy publications, but we do not contribute primary research or provide extensive support to advanced Darfur policy analysis. SDC does not normally coordinate grassroots or local events, though we may sometimes endorse or participate in events organized by others.

Membership:
To see a list of our member organizations, click here. Member groups have endorsed the January 2008 Save Darfur Canada Unity Statement. Our Unity Statement outlines the solutions that our coalition supports to end the current crisis in Darfur. Our policies promote international engagement through a UN-sanctioned framework, and solutions to lay the groundwork for long lasting peace in Darfur and the whole of Sudan.

A not-for-profit organization:
Save Darfur Canada is a federal not-for-profit coalition, and is the only Canadian organization mandated to undertake sustained Darfur advocacy in both official languages. We do not qualify for charitable status under the law because our activities are advocacy focused, and thus unfortunately we cannot issue tax receipts for contributions received. All of our funding directly finances Darfur advocacy work in Canada. For information on supporting SDC and to find out how your sponsorship can help us in the work we do, click here.
